Battling Suicidal Thoughts

Battling Suicidal Thoughts

Suicide is the third leading cause of death and often originates from a profound sense of hopelessness. The incapacity to identify solutions or handle difficult life situations may drive individuals to view suicide as the sole recourse. Depression, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, Substance Abuse, and a family history of the tragedy are significant risk factors.

There were numerous unfortunate events in my past that triggered my depression and increased suicidal thoughts. Overcoming one event after another without addressing the trauma left me overwhelmed with regret and disappointment. Excessive drinking and drug use to numb the pain made me question the value of my life.

Suppressing emotions and thoughts can lead to increased suicidal ideation. In a delicate condition and ashamed of my experiences, I began writing poetry, unaware of its transformative power to bring me out of darkness and restore hope. Upon reflection, I discovered that writing is a powerful means of emotional expression. I now advocate for others to use pen and paper to liberate their thoughts.

Feeling hopeless? Believe you are not alone. Deuteronomy 31:6 says be strong & courageous; God won't forsake us. Reaching out to a minister, trusted loved one, mental health specialist or support group can be lifesaving; If talking to people you know feels too difficult, you can still talk to someone who cares and wants to help by calling or texting the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988. They offer 24/7 support, 365 days.

Maybe you messed up or made the wrong choice. You believe you've missed the opportunity to achieve your desired life or lost a significant friendship. 1 John 1:9 says, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness". Forgiveness is achievable and nothing you have done diminishes your worth. Persisting in your existence allows you to regain command over situations and enhance them. You still possess purpose and significance.

No matter how down you may feel, keep these three things in mind:

1. Emotions are temporary, and you can learn how to better manage them. Practice prioritizing focus on facts over feelings.

2. Life and people can change, but God remains the same and you deserve another chance. Your life deserves another chance. Achieve comfort in your own identity by dedicating more time to self-care and spiritual growth.

3. Life takes courage and resilience. Forgive, apologize, make amends, and give yourself time to heal and evolve.

There's Hope! Your story isn't over.
